An accomplished sculptor, Thomas Augustine also works in oil on
canvas and glass. It is one of his strengths to conceive of appropriate
sculpture projects, both philosophically and culturally. In addition
to his own work, he has designed and supervised art projects and
selected the artists for numerous installations - both private and
public.
Thomas has had much success in forming concepts
for public sculpture and choosing the artists and technicians to
produce it. This success comes from his belief in the power of communication
present in sculpture. Art and Antiques Magazine lauded his concept
for the now-famous collection of public bronzes around Pioneer Courthouse
Square in Portland, Oregon, because they were widely accepted, but
also kept squarely within "American Naturalist Realism."
For over 30 years, Thomas has either owned or
been an Art Director for galleries and production studios, and is
currently the Director of Janice Griffin Gallery in Portland, Oregon's
Pearl District.
