In 1905, 11 yachts were invited in Europe to race for the Kaiser's Cup, offered by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Among these luxury yachts, was a three mast steam schooner the Atlantic. She was 185 ft. long and owned by Wilson Marshall. The Atlantic would enter the legend of boating racing forever when on the seventh day of racing she logged a staggering 341 nautical miles, winning the Kaiser Cup. Driven to her potential by her lean hull and 18,500 sq. ft. of sail she crossed the ocean in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute, and 19 seconds, which was a record that would stand for the next 50 years! In 1997, the New York Yacht Club hosted the Atlantic Challenge race in honor of the memory of this remarkable vessel.
